I pulled up to the first parking spot I could find. When I glanced at the clock, it was 11:45. We would have made it a lot sooner, but I had to witness an unnecessary dispute between Logan and Judy over who was riding shotgun. Neither of them could come to an agreement, so I recommended a game of rock, paper, scissors to shut them up.

Judy won and Logan lost. I’d hoped that would have solved the problem, but no, I was wrong. The whole ten-minute drive I was forced to listen to Logan accuse Judy of cheating. I found myself wanting to turn around and call off the whole thing. But thankfully, they’d shut the hell up the moment I parked. Or so I thought.

“You’re still a damn cheater!” Logan said after a moment of silence.

“Paper beats rock, dumbass! I won fair and square. You’re just a sore loser.”

“Am not!” Logan balled his fist and leaned closer to Judy. “I want a rematch on the way back.”

I cleared my throat and shifted my body toward them. “I’m sorry. Are we five? Or are we grown adults here?”

Judy shrugged and nudged her thumb toward the back seat. “He’s your boyfriend. He’s the one that won’t get over the fact that he lost.”

Logan sprung forward again. “Because you’re a cheater!”

I began to lose my patience. I wondered if this is how my mom felt after dealing with me and Sarah when we were kids. I was ready to knock both of them senseless.

“If both of you don’t shut up and let it go, then you’ll be walking back to my house, got it?”

Finally, a moment of silence. I took a deep breath and stared out the window, shaking my head and fighting the urge to laugh at how ridiculous they were being. Judy wasn’t wrong, though. Paper does beat rock, and why Logan couldn’t be a man and accept defeat was beyond my knowledge. In my opinion, he was a sore loser and didn’t want to admit it. Must have been the jock inside of him. But let me not say that out loud. That’ll get him started again.

He scooted closer to the front and draped both his arms on opposite head rests.

“So, are we going to sit here or are we going to walk inside?”

I leaned closer to the window to look around. “I want to know for sure that she’s in there before we walk inside. I wanted to get here a little early to scope the outside in case there were hunters following her.”

Judy glanced at the time. “Well, we did get here early, and she did say at noon. She may not be here yet.”

“So… while we’re just sitting here waiting around, what’s the plan?” Logan asked.

“I thought about it on the way here. I think it might be best for me to go in alone. She might get spooked if all three of us walk in together. It’d be best to make her think I came here alone.
